We’ve recently made the transition to doing school at home, at least for the time being. I’m not ‘against’ school by any means; this is just what is working for us in this season. Plus, she’s only in pre-k so I can’t really mess her up too bad, can I? 😉 Kidding. But one thing I am passionate about is fostering kids’ creativity and letting them guide (to some extent) learning things that they’re interested in. Sage was all about apple week, she loves learning about nature, and she was over the moon when I offered to finish the week with an apple treat. She even wanted to create her own recipe. So, with a little guidance from mom, we created her first ever apple treat: I called it crumble, and she told me there was nothing crumbly about it- it was an apple CRUNCH (and that her favorite part was the apples, because they tasted like ‘really good applesauce’).
This is the REAL DEAL friends, butter, sugar and all (it is, however gluten-free, for those of you who need to abstain). Why mess with tradition? I believe real food means all foods fit– even, no, especially desserts made with butter, sugar and a whole lot of love.
Sage’s Fall Apple Crunch
Apples:
6-8 large cooking apples; peeled, cored and sliced thin
1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 cup sugar 2 tbsp butter, chopped
Crumble topping:
1 1/4 cup oats (use gluten-free if you need) 1/2 cup almond flour (use whatever flour you prefer; I love the flavor almond flour lends) 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1/4 tsp ground ginger pinch sea salt 3 tbsp melted butter 3 tbsp slightly- softened butter
1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease a baking dish (we used an 8×8″ pan) with butter.
2. Toss apples with cinnamon and sugar. Spread evenly in bottom of pan. Dot with butter.
3. In a bowl, combine oats, almond flour, sugar and spices. Stir in melted butter. 4. Add softened butter and using hands, combine so the butter and oat mixture so it forms crumbs. Spread over top of apples. 5. Bake in oven 40-50 minutes until apples are cooked and topping is crisp.
